Gefilte Fish

 

1 jar gefilte fish (whitefish and pike)
2 onions, sliced
4 carrots, sliced lengthwise
1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1/2 teaspoon sugar (or to taste)
1 teaspoon almond extract
parsley, to garnish
horseradish, on the side

  1. Wash individual fish patties gently with cool water; drain in a colander.
  2. Place onions and carrots in a large pot or electric kettle. Cover with water (approx. 3").
  3. Bring water to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Add salt, white pepper, sugar and almond extract.
  5. Stir / add fish patties.
  6. Simmer for 1 hour covered.
  7. Refrigerate with the water.
  8. Serve without water.
  9. Garnish with 2-3 carrot slices and a sprig of parsley.
  10. Serve on a lettuce leaf with horseradish on the side.
